Advanced Phone Field fixes the one thing Gravity Forms still does a bit too loosely: phone numbers. The stock “Phone” field is basically formatting + a basic pattern. It won’t stop users from pasting garbage, and it won’t give you a consistent format to send into a CRM.
This addon adds a dedicated phone input with smarter validation and (usually) a country-aware format. On real projects this matters when you run ads internationally, do callbacks, or trigger SMS/WhatsApp flows and don’t want to clean data by hand.
The mechanic is simple: the field is rendered by frontend JS (mask/selector/formatting), and Gravity Forms stores the submitted value as an entry. If that JS doesn’t initialize, users can type anything — so most “bugs” you’ll see are actually optimization/caching breaking script execution order.
What it plays with (so you can predict conflicts)
- Gravity Forms: required. If the site uses GF AJAX forms or multi-page forms, test those specifically—custom fields sometimes need re-init on page transitions.
- Caching/optimization (WP Rocket, Autoptimize, LiteSpeed): “Delay JS”/“Defer” is the usual killer. Symptom: the country dropdown doesn’t appear, cursor jumps, validation fires on good numbers. Fix: exclude the addon’s JS (and sometimes
jquery) from delay on pages with the form. - Other mask scripts: don’t stack two phone masks on the same input. You’ll get double-formatting and failed validation on submit.
- CRM/webhooks: decide what you store/sync (national format vs international). Mixing formats across forms is how deduplication dies.
GPL notes, without fairy tales
The field works without a license key. You can build forms, collect entries, and validate numbers normally.
What you don’t get is the vendor’s update channel/support. Updates are manual: upload the new ZIP over the current version. If there’s an “activate license” notice in wp-admin, it’s not blocking functionality—it’s about updates/support.
